The changes in the black cover publication is described here:
The reason of the black cover change is explained here:
There appears to be another English translation available by Larisa Malgosheva-Bartone, but I was unable to find out which publisher that belongs to.
Unfortunately there is some controversy regarding the publication of the Ringing Cedar series, which you can read about in the link below. It does not explain the issue about the translation differences though.
The original English translation was made by John Woodsworth. This is also in my opinion the best translation out there. Due to US copyright law, 32% of the original English translation had to be changed for subsequent publications. The English version published by Vladimir Megre is unfortunately not the original English translation, even though he is the original author of the Russian version.
Adding to the confusion, Vladimir Megre calls his English publication the Authorized Edition, but this is not the original unchanged English edition.
Due to contractual obligations, no additional copies of the original English translation by John Woodsworth will be printed. So at one point, stock will run out. Unfortunately book 10 onward is not translated by John Woodsworth either.
Hopefully this will clear things up a bit as to the differences between the publications.
